The World at Large (Part 2)

Bonded labor is probably the least known form of slavery today. It is though, an efficient way of enslaving people. A person becomes a bonded laborer when their labor is demanded as a means of repayment for a loan. Let’s assume you have a sick child and no means to pay the mounting bills. Suppose somebody then offers you a way out and you take it. It’s all too easy to become trapped and the value of the work done will always be greater than the original sum of money borrowed.

It’s nothing new either, has been going on since the dawn of time, quietly destroying lives as if life is worth nothing at all.

Children are not exempt from slavery. Poverty and the promise of a better life can lead some parents into sending their young into bondage. Most domestic workers are between the ages of 12 and 17, although some are much younger. Child domestic workers are most at risk of abuse and exploitation. They are often separated from their families and there is always the risk of them being physically and sexually assaulted.

Then of course, there is child trafficking. This form of slavery involves a child being forcibly taken away by threat or the use of violence, deception or coercion so they can be exploited and enslaved within the sex industry. The very thought of such a practice causes my blood to boil.

There are also forced marriages. A forced marriage takes place when the bride, groom or both do not want to get married. They are forced into marriage and many of them may get tricked into moving abroad, physically threatened or emotionally blackmailed to do so.

In Europe alone, officials estimate that more than 200,000 women and girls are smuggled out of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet republics each year. Most of them end up working as slaves within the sex trade. Almost half of them are transported to Western Europe while roughly a quarter end up in the United States.

We live in a frightening world. Trafficking, bonded labor, forced marriage…it’s all the same to me. It’s all slavery, nothing more and nothing less.

Looking out of my window right now, I see the sun shining above the snow-coated earth and it’s almost difficult to believe the whole world isn’t as peaceful as it is here at this very moment.

I am being deceived though. The world is far from peaceful. There are evil people out there, traffickers of lives and seller of souls. I am sure God is waiting to punish them and I pray their punishment be just. May it fit their crime. May they rot in hell.
